We mourn the passing of Astrid Roemer, one of the most uncompromising and visionary voices in Caribbean and Dutch-language literature.
A Surinamese writer of immense courage, Roemer wrote against silence - about colonial violence, exile, queerness, intimacy, and political rupture - with a language that was sharp, tender, and radically her own. She was the first Surinamese writer to receive the highest honours in Dutch-language literature, including the P. C. Hooft Award and the Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren.
We are deeply proud at Tilted Axis Press to have brought Astrid Roemer’s work into the English-speaking world - to have helped carry her voice across languages and borders. Her writing has always deserved to be read widely, fiercely, and with care.
Astrid Roemer changed the literary landscape not by asking for permission, but by writing as if freedom were already hers.
