TANGLED TONGUES | LENGUAS ENREDADAS is back this summer for a special writing session focused on multilingual writing and translation, with Ecuadorian author Yuliana Ortiz Ruano and translator Madeleine Arenivar.
Many of us speak Spanglish only in susurros, in casual conversations, and never legitimise it in writing beyond disappearing texts sent to family and friends. En la vida pública, we clutch these two linguistic tools entirely separate, uno en cada puño, as though their interaction would be a chemical disaster.
In Gloria Anzalúa’s words, for many of us occupying multiple territories and identities, we write from a unique positionality: that of a many-armed and legged body. This body bears a tongue that slips between, falling through vowels and accents fluidly, una lengua enredada trying to articulate itself through language. Spanglish is not broken English, it is a way of articulating a blend of identities, crossed by languages, migration and memory.
Join us for a writing session with Yuliana and Madeleine focusing on processes of layered translation, hybridity, and writing in response to Yuliana’s incredible book Fiebre de Carnaval/ Carnival Fever.
The session will be 2 hours long (including open writing, discussion and sharing), with free dinner provided after!
